Resources & Links for spiritual encouragement|
(strictly NHL resources are found here)
Rachael printed out this story that was a wonderful encouragement to us all in many ways - we needed frequent reminders that God Himself was watching over us. The background of the song provided great inspiration:
His Eye is on the Sparrow by Civilla Martin
Mom's dear cousin Melanie sang the song for us at the funeral service.
Donít waste your cancer by John Piper
Rachael also pointed out this excellent essay that focuses on using the trials of life to be drawn nearer to our sovereign Lord, to see "life" as being far beyond our mortality.
Fasting Another resource Rachael found, this article explains what fasting is & isn't, as well as an outline of the how-to & why-to of fasting.
I found this website that deals with the question of "Why?" in our sufferings. Though that website is specifically for those suffering with eating disorders, suffering is fairly universal - it hurts no matter what brought on the pain. My understanding of the "why?" question is in the Amazing Praises section.
Dr. MacArthur's website addresses the feeling of being abandoned by God while struggling in trials.
BOOKS I read (some of the many, many, MANY) that were spiritually encouraging:
A Bend in the Road by David Jeremiah
Life on Hold: Finding Hope in the Face of Serious Illness by David G. Seiler & Laurel S. Brunvoll
Plant a Geranium in Your Cranium: Planting Seeds of Joy in the Manure of Life by Barbara Johnson
The Nevertheless Principle by Marion Bond West
and these books that are not about cancer, but are about life:
To Know Him by Name (also titled The Peace & Power of Knowing God's Name) by Kay Arthur (great help since it focuses on GOD rather than on ME)
Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan and Hind's Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard are very encouraging & inspiring always
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom & Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Elliot (because missionary books help me in trials)
Heaven (Your Real Home) by Joni Tada
